I am a pre-pharmacy student doing a case study on a southeast asian disease and I just wanted to know if anyone every came across something like this. If you could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Pasteur Institute are working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) and are trying to discover the cause of a newly discovered disease originating in rural Southeast Asia. Infected patients feature a rapidly escalating severe fever with a rash, followed soon afterwards by rapidly declining lung function. Death occurs in about 60% of those infected when treatment is unavailable, but when patients are hospitalized during the initial febrile (feverish) phase of the illness and given supportive care, the death rate drops to less than 15%. No bacterial, fungal or parasitic agents have been identified in patients, but significant aberrations in respiratory tissue structure are seen in biopsies taken from infected patients during the acute illness, including frequent changes in cell nucleus appearance. Using methods available in February 2008, researchers also discover non-human nucleic acid in respiratory tissue samples from febrile phase patients. This nucleic acid consists of 38% A, 22%C, 15%G and 25% T.
